CHAPTER HIGHLIGHTS APPEARING IN STRUCTURAL BUILDING COMPONENTS MAGAZINE:
August 2007
The main topic of discussion at the May Central Florida Chapter meeting was local membership and providing chapter value to local manufacturers. Fortunately there are no critical issues that are causing market problems, so this is a time to step back and look at how the chapter would like to focus its efforts. Industry consolidation was also discussed and how its effect on the composition of the membership has evolved.
The meeting attendees agreed to renew their efforts to engage the smaller local manufacturers and build up the grassroots of the chapter membership. They also discussed possible meeting programs to generate more attendance. The idea of combining chapter meetings with educational programs, such as a seminar for builders on handling and installation, was suggested.
The May meeting also featured a presentation on WTCA programs to build and support your business, including SCORE, forklift certification, Professional Leadership Academy, SBC Research Institute, In-Plant Basic Training and the driver training program in development. An update was provided on the status of CEU approval for the fire service truss plant tour, with a ruling by the Department of Business and Professional Regulation expected in early July. The accomplishments of the FBMA/WTCA Joint Legislative Conference were noted, too.
September/October 2007
The plant tour being planned by the Central Florida Chapter for the fire service took another step forward in July. As approval was pending on continuing education credit for the event, the members began finalizing the schedule. Several counties will be invited, including Lake, Seminole and Orange, so more than 300 participants could attend. A live fire demonstration may be added to the program, or the chapter may use video footage from the demonstration by the New York Chapter in October 2006 or by the Iowa Chapter in August 2007. Dates in mid to late October would be investigated to maximize attendance by the fire service professionals.
Also at the July chapter meeting, members were encouraged to expand their involvement with local home builder associations (HBA). Noting the WTCA Board resolution requesting that chapters and members attend HBA code committee meetings, several members mentioned that they attend the monthly HBA meetings as much as possible to keep abreast of current issues and pass along information from our industry. The chapter members also discussed contacting the local American Institute of Architects (AIA) groups. Bill Heine will start with AIA Orlando and Bill Bruce will contact AIA Gainsville.
April 2007
The main topic of discussion at the January meeting was the plant tour being planned by the Central Florida Chapter for the fire service. The proposed schedule would have two tours on two separate days to maximize the number of fire service professionals able to attend. Several counties will be invited, including Lake, Seminole and Orange, so more than 300 participants could attend. The tour has been submitted for continuing education credit, so the chapter hopes that will be an additional incentive to attract prospective attendees. Chapter members discussed the option of creating and distributing a flyer for fire departments that could gauge interest levels in the tour as well as possible dates. Conducting a live fire demonstration may be added to the program, too. No decision was reached on the handouts that will be provided to the attendees, but those details would be readdressed at the chapter’s March meeting.
Additional items discussed at the chapter meeting included the 2006 Florida Building Code adoption process and 2007 code change process, and the 2006 update of Building Component Safety Information (BCSI). Members were reminded of the March meeting date change to coincide with the FBMA/WTCA Legislative Conference and everyone was encouraged to attend.
January/February 2007
The Central Florida Chapter held its final meeting of the year in November. High on the agenda was discussion of the educational programs and truss plant tours that the chapter is planning to provide for the fire service. Depending upon attendance, they may run several tours on consecutive days to accommodate all fire shifts. In addition to the tour, they plan to offer one or more Truss Technology Workshop courses. Since the event will offer continuing education credit, they anticipate a solid turnout.
At the meeting, the 2007 Florida Legislative Conference, a joint effort between WTCA and the Florida Building Materials Association (FBMA), was discussed too. The attendees reviewed how WTCA will be responsible for all initiatives that affect the structural building components industry and FBMA will be responsible for everything else in which a retail dealer is involved. The chapter agreed to move its meeting date from March 13 to March 27 to align with the conference on March 28-29. They also supported the idea of a Florida component manufacturers’ legislative and related issues discussion on the first day of the conference.
May 2006
At its March meeting, the Central Florida Chapter swore in its new officers: Bill Heine of CBS Builders Supply as President, Herb Hildebrand of Casmin as Vice President and Chuck Stillwaggon of Casmin as Secretary. The featured topic of the evening was In-Plant WTCA QC. Tony Piek of WTCA staff was on-hand to discuss the features and benefits of In-Plant WTCA QC as well as the recent work by the WTCA Quality Control Committee and the anticipated 2006 priorities.
For its May meeting, the Central Florida Chapter is jointly sponsoring a statewide Florida Chapters meeting. The guest speaker will be WTCA Legal Counsel Kent Pagel. The meeting will be held on May 16 in Orlando. For more information, contact WTCA staff.
September/October 2005
Turnout was good as the Central Florida Chapter held it summer meeting on July 19 at the Holiday Inn in Altamonte Springs. The technical issues discussion included the way that gable end framing is displayed on drawings, the use of 5-ply plywood when 3-ply is specified, and wood-to-masonry contact in bearing conditions. Members were also interested in the Florida Legislative Confer-ence being developed by the Florida Exe-cutive Committee. The main topic of the evening, however, was the upcoming educational program for building officials on August 20. With staff assistance, the chapter developed an eight-hour program consisting of several Truss Technology Workshop courses and a plant tour. This ambitious Saturday event promised continuing education credits for the participants at the cost of only $25 for lunch. With guest presenters from several member companies, this promised to be an excellent day for educating building officials on the things they need to know about structural building components.
May 2005
This year, the Central Florida Chapter decided to change from meeting monthly to meeting on alternate months. The chapter’s upcoming meetings this year are scheduled for the third Tuesday of May, June, September and November. At the chapter’s March meeting, members made plans for a summer educational program as well. It will be arranging a one-day seminar for builders and building officials. A subcommittee is working with WTCA staff to determine which Truss Technology Workshop presentations to use. The chapter also hopes to combine the seminar with a truss plant tour. An update will be given on the plans for the educational seminar at the chapter’s May 17 meeting.
November 2004
The Central Florida Chapter holds its meetings on the third Tuesday of every month. Having run out of outside issues to make Central Florida better, we will be focusing on ourselves to make our members and member's companies better. Future topics will be having safe and happy people, turnover, violence in the work place and DOT compliance. Our monthly meetings are held at Maison Jardin Restaurant in Altamonte Springs. One attendee each night will win the 50/50 contest; the other half is donated to the chartable fund organized in memory of past Chapter Secretary Robert W. Hall.
September/October 2004
For its upcoming meeting on September 21, the Central Florida Chapter will have a guest speaker from Quick-Tie Systems. Taking an innovative approach to tie-down, this company from Jacksonville uses airline cable which may be bolted on top of trusses and secured. The quarter- or half-inch-thick cable may also find use in repair applications. Join us for this interesting presentation and bring your questions for our speaker. As always, our monthly meeting will be held at Maison Jardin Restaurant in Altamonte Springs. An exceptional French restaurant, the food is nearly better than the conversation.
The Central Florida Chapter will continue to hold its fall meetings on the third Tuesday of the month. Plans are underway for guest speakers at the November and December meetings which will focus on human resources and personnel. In particular, we will be addressing violence in the workplace and substance abuse. One attendee each night will also win the 50/50 contest; the other half is donated to the charitable fund organized in memory of past Chapter Secretary Robert W. Hall.
March 2004
At its January meeting, the Central Florida Chapter inducted new officers. David Wright moved into the position of Past President and Chuck Stillwaggon assumed the presidency. Bill Heine stepped into the role of Vice President and Bill Ranieri accepted the Treasurer position. Remaining in their existing positions were Don Ciccone as Secretary and Tony Harris as the Chapter Representative to the WTCA Board. The guest presentation for the evening was given by Kirk Grundahl of WTCA staff and first on the agenda was the new Building Component Safety Information (BCSI) series, “Guide to Good Practice for Handling, Installing & Bracing of Metal Plate Connected Wood Trusses.” Jointly developed by WTCA and TPI, BCSI represents a good broad base of review and consensus in the industry. Copies of the BCSI 1-03 booklet were available at the meeting for all to review. Also on hand were copies of B1, the poster replacing the WTCA Jobsite Warning Poster and the HIB-91 Summary Sheet. In addition, Kirk’s presentation discussed recent developments in WTCA’s Truss Knowledge Online (TKO) system, including the availability of Truss Technician Training (TTT) Level III online and the Truss Technology Workshop (TTW) program on FBPE Rule 61G15-31.003 & ANSI/TPI/WTCA 4-2002. In 2004, the Central Florida Chapter will continue to hold its meetings on the third Tuesday of the month.
January/February 2003
This fall, the Central Florida Chapter reelected the 2002 slate of officers to serve in 2003. Continuing in their roles are: David Wright of Smyth Lumber & Truss as Chapter President, Don Gnapp of Boise Cascade as Vice President, Robert Hall of Bruce Component Systems, Inc. as Secretary, and Mike Mullins of Mike L. Mullins Construction Inc. as Treasurer. The chapter will continue its regular schedule of meeting on the third Tuesday of the month. At the next meeting on January 21, the guest speaker will be Kip Amundrud of EnviroSafe Wood Treatment Products.
March 2002
The Central Florida Chapter began the year with the re-election of last year's officers. Continuing in their positions are: David Wright as President, Don Gnapp as Vice President, Robert Hall as Secretary and Mike Mullins as Treasurer. The chapter will continue its regular schedule of meeting on the third Tuesday of each month. A priority for 2002 is membership recruitment. The chapter also expects to focus a great deal of energy on the code changes and challenges. In addition, the chapter will continue to strengthen its relationships with local building departments and the Building Officials Association of Florida (BOAF).
CHAPTER HIGHLIGHTS APPEARING IN WOODWORDS MAGAZINE:
August 2000
The Central Florida chapter continues to hold meetings on the third Tuesday of every month. Past topics include an in-depth discussion of the Statewide Building Code. The chapter also held a very successful meeting with the Lake Mary Building Department. They were able to address several perennial concerns such as uplift loads, bracing and various aspects of plan verification. The chapter expects to focus on other pertinent issues as it plans its upcoming fall meetings.
December 1999
The November CFCMA Chapter meeting included discussion regarding the WTCA Board Meeting in Kansas City, Missouri, STCA, SBCMC and the Chapter Summit in Orlando, Florida. The chapter also selected new officers for the year 2000. The CFCMA holds a chapter meeting on the third Tuesday of every month.
November 1999
The Chapter sponsored several Truss Technology Workshops in the past few months, including a Truss Field Repair and Inspection of Installed Wood Trusses course held in Melbourne; a private class for the City of Orlando on Inspection of Installed Wood Trusses, the Inspection of Installed Wood Trusses and Fire Performance of Trusses courses held in St. Augustine; and the Inspection of Installed Wood Girder Trusses along with Connection and Tie-Downs for Residential & Light Commercial Construction also held in St. Augustine. The CFCMA holds a Chapter Meeting on the third Tuesday of every month.
August 1999
The Chapter had a great June meeting, with building officials from Lake, Orange and Seminole counties as guest speakers. They explained the permitting process for each individual county and answered questions from the floor. Seventeen truss plants were in attendance as were 14 vendors/associate members.
The building officials from all three counties agreed to come back to do individual county programs and will include us in all future programs that they offer.
June/July 1999
The Central Florida chapter has been working with other chapters in Florida and the Building Officials Association of Florida to allow plans to be sealed on the first page only. The State Rules and Regulations have a section on Signing and Sealing, and if it can be shown that this practice is not in violation of that, the rule can be changed. Approximately five key building officials in Florida will be meeting on June 15 to discuss this issue.
