SBC Industry News Update for April 16, 2010
Members of SBCA’s newest chapter in Montana participated in their first state-wide educational conference on March 30 in Bozeman, MT. Hosting a booth for seven hours at the 5th Annual Building Code Education Conference, the chapter provided publications and chapter rosters to building inspectors, fire officials, architects, engineers and builders.
"The most traffic was during the noon hour, as lunch was served just a few feet from the booths," said Chapter President Jess Lohse. "The BCSI booklets were a big hit, and I had a request from an official with the City of Great Falls building department for 40 BCSI booklets. I’m following up with him to see if he would like the chapter to offer a presentation or support in other ways."
Put on by the Montana Dept of Labor & Industry in cooperation with the Montana Chapter of the ICC, this event was an excellent venue for SBCA – Montana as it makes a name for itself in the marketplace. Members are looking forward to continuing to grow their chapter and the market for structural building components.
November 2009
Following a series of monthly meetings to start up the chapter, SBCA’s newest chapter, SBCA – Montana, has settled into a quarterly meeting schedule. Since its kick-off meeting in January, the chapter has elected officers, finalized its bylaws and begun collecting dues. The organizing members set as their task list: getting clarification from building officials on snow loads; resolving transportation and permit questions; educating building officials, end users and installers on components; and educating architects and engineers so that more projects specify trusses.
The chapter’s priorities at this time are membership recruitment and educational outreach. The members are actively reaching out to their local building officials to let them know a chapter has been created that will be ready to assist them and share pertinent information with them. They have already sponsored BCSI booklets for Brandt Salo at the City of Helena for a presentation to the local NAHB chapter, and now the chapter is making plans to participate in the Fifth Annual State of Montana Building Education Conference in Bozeman, MT next spring.
The first meeting of the new Montana Chapter was a success! The component manufacturers and suppliers in attendance confirmed that we have the interest and desire to create a chapter that will be open to everyone doing business in the state.
Topics discussed where we will be more effective working as a group:
- Getting clarification from building officials on snow loads
- Resolving transportation and permit questions
- Educating building officials, end users and installers on components
- Educating designers so that more projects specify trusses
The benefits of having a chapter include:
- Being able to approach building officials, the DOT and others as a group so we can establish working relationships not adversarial ones
- Establishing consistent practices and expectations in the market so we can expand the overall use of components
- Sharing the costs, both time and money, of providing education and acting as a resource for the building community
Decisions reached:
- Jesse Lohse of Rocky Mountain Truss is Acting President
- Don McGrady of WBC Building Components in Secretary/Treasurer
- All meetings will be conducted with a teleconference to maximize the ability of everyone to participate
Please consider joining us for the next meeting. We hope you will attend.
