CHAPTER HIGHLIGHTS APPEARING IN STRUCTURAL BUILDING COMPONENTS MAGAZINE:
September/October 2007
In keeping with tradition, the Tennessee Chapter held its summer meeting following a golf tournament. This year, heavy rain drove the last group off of the 18th hole before they finished, but a good time was had nonetheless.
The agenda at the chapter meeting included the new SBC Research Institute, with the attendees asking lots of questions. Photos from the June Open House were provided, too. The members also received an update on the immigration situation and recent developments in Congress. The meeting also provided the opportunity for the members to select a new Secretary/Treasurer, since the position had opened up a few months earlier—Tom Butler of McGuffin Truss agreed to take the job for the remainder of the year.
The fall chapter meeting will be held on October 16 in Knoxville, and everyone in Tennessee is welcome to attend.
December 2006
At the Tennessee Chapter’s October meeting, Chapter President Ted Kolanko gave a review of the educational program and fire test performed with the help of WTCA staff member Will Warlick for the Rutherford County Code Officials Association (RCCOA). Ted explained how each phase of the test was completed and then described each of the truss-related fire myths that the test burn set out to resolve. He also expressed to the chapter members how important tours and testing like this are as a method of educating the fire service and others about building components.
Next, the WTCA Board Resolutions from the October Board meeting were addressed. The importance of designating a Local Relationship-Building Chair and sponsoring at least two plant tours each year was discussed. In reviewing the WTCA Board Resolution concerning how to respond to local media situations, it was emphasized how critical it is not to react to these situations as the various media outlets are often attempting to “create a buzz” and there is no reason for any component manufacturer to add to the buzz.
April 2006
For the second year in a row, the Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky and Tennessee Chapters held a joint chapter meeting in Chattanooga, TN. The guest speaker for this January meeting was WTCA Legal Counsel Kent Pagel. Speaking on “Successfully Negotiating an Acceptable Customer Contract,” Mr. Pagel did not disappoint the audience. His presentation focused on the following elements:
General considerations to follow when reviewing a customer's proposed purchase order or subcontract agreement
A review of problematic provisions from a sample agreement
Guidelines on how to address problematic provisions
In addition, a preview was shown of his new program for WTCA, ORisk: Online Risk and Liability Management. The meeting also offered the opportunity for members to discuss industry issues with neighboring chapters and share their experiences. For example, members of both the Alabama and Tennessee Chapters have encountered requests for sealed placement diagrams. The draft WTCA Tech Note for Alabama was reviewed and it was decided that a similar Tech Note would be drafted for Tennessee. Everyone in attendance agreed that the evening was time very well spent.
September/October 2005
The Tennessee Chapter held its summer meeting in conjunction with a golf tournament in Morristown. Though the weather was hot and humid, the day could not have gone better. After golfing, the members traveled to the scenic lake house of Past President Frank McGuffin. Complete with a catered dinner, the meeting covered pertinent topics in the chapter and included the golf awards. The golfers and non-golfers enjoyed the event so much that the possibility of repeating the process for the October 18 meeting was going to be investigated.
June 2005
The Tennessee Chapter held its spring quarterly meeting on April 19. Gaby Redwanly, Chief Engineer for MiTek Industries, delivered a presentation on the I-Codes. Since Tennessee has not adopted the IBC and IRC yet, chapter members were very interested to hear how the I-Codes will affect the way they conduct business. Gaby covered the new loading information in depth and explained many of the technical ramifications. The chapter thanks him for an impressive presentation. The next chapter meeting will be held on July 19 in Morristown and will include the annual golf tournament.
April 2005
The Tennessee Chapter held a very successful Joint Chapter Meeting on February 11 in Chattanooga, TN. Approximately forty members from all four chapters participated in the meeting and dinner. Featuring a roundtable discussion on issues of interest to members, the evening could not have gone better. The discussion included the BSCI series of documents, sealed placement plans and electronic seals, the new Truss Load Guide, whole house design, contracts and warranties, and third party inspections. Chapter members were able to strengthen their relationship with WTCA staff and each other, and they may have begun an annual joint meeting tradition.
December 2004
The Tennessee Chapter held its fall meeting on October 18 at the DoubleTree Hotel in Johnson City. The guest speaker was Kirk Grundahl of WTCA staff. The presentation contained updates on all of WTCA’s products and services including: Truss Technician Training (TTT) and the new Technical Assessment Tests Online (TATO); Work Force Development; QC; insurance; BCSI 1-03 and the new Truss Technology Workshop programs on installation and bracing; and the four new Truss Technology in Building sheets expected later this year.
