January/February 2008
This fall, the Western Chapter held two successful events: a golf tournament in September and a membership meeting in November. Kicking off the meeting Steve Wethern of BMC West and Lee Howe of Lumbermen’s Building Centers focused on strength in unity and the importance of the association. Steve also accepted the post of Chapter President and Lee Howe moved to the Secretary post. David Hughes of Oregon Truss retained the job of Vice President, and Mark Smith of Trus-Way joined the officer rotation as Treasurer.

The guest speaker for the evening was Jim Chapman, President of Legend Homes, one of the regions largest builders. Jim reviewed the state of the market and where it is headed for 2008. In the context of the urban growth boundaries of the insular Portland market and the overbuilding of recent years, the most notable pressures are currently green building standards and construction defect litigation.

The attendees also reviewed the crane operator training and inspection certification legislation that recently passed in Washington. The effect of this legislation on chapter members in Oregon and southern Washington was discussed as well as steps that WTCA is taking with members to modify aspects of the proposed rules and positively influence the outcome.

May 2005
The new Western Chapter covering Oregon and southern Washington held a great meeting this February in Tualatin. Though the chapter is still finalizing its official paperwork, members already have an issue to confront—truss submittals. The counties in Oregon lack a consistent requirement for truss submittals in the building permit process. Some areas require a full placement plan and all engineered, sealed drawings to be submitted prior to issuing a building permit. Other areas allow project changes after the permit is issued but then never request an updated set of plans. The members present agreed that Marion County has the procedure that seems to work the best. It requires a placement plan showing project design loads, truss locations and the magnitude of any truss-to-bearing reactions over one ton, but it stops short of sealed drawings. The chapter has formed a committee to draft a position statement on why the Marion County procedure works and other counties do not. From that it will work to educate other counties and encourage a statewide position. Another important goal of the new chapter this year is membership recruitment. The expectation is that holding quarterly meetings, including one with a summer golf tournament, will increase awareness of and participation in the growing chapter.

March 2005
The formation of the Western Component Manufacturers Association is nearly complete. Once it’s official, this WTCA Chapter will encompass Oregon and southern Washington. The chapter officers are: President Lee Howe (Lumbermen’s Building Centers), Vice President David Hughes (Oregon Truss), Treasurer Greg Knutson (Precision Roof Trusses) and Secretary Steve Wethern (BMC West). The bylaws and IRS paperwork are almost finished and the chapter expects to petition the WTCA Board for recognition later this spring.

August 2004
Component manufacturer and associate members are currently hard at work setting up a new Oregon Chapter. The first Oregon Chapter Kick-Off Meeting was held on June 9 and drew an impressive crowd. Several area manufacturers were represented and the associate members were on board too. The tab for dinner was generously picked up MiTek Industries. Everyone at the meeting agreed that it was time to form a local chapter and began making plans. The second meeting was held on July 8 and the agenda of issues to tackle included ODOT permits, fall protection issues and OSHA, and stamped layout requirements. In addition, the chapter chose a name: Western Component Manufacturers Association (WCMA).

This chapter development is proceeding at a quick pace, and we expect to be hearing a lot more from them throughout the summer and fall. If you would like more information, please feel free to contact Anna at WTCA-National (608/310-6719 or ), David Hughes at Oregon Truss (503/581-8787 or ) or Lee Howe at Lumbermen’s Building Centers (503/657-8644 or ). Anyone who is ready, willing and able is welcome to participate!
