CHAPTER HIGHLIGHTS APPEARING IN STRUCTURAL BUILDING COMPONENTS MAGAZINE:
June/July 2008
The Kentucky Chapter held its first meeting of 2008 in early April. Using SBC Connection, members called in from across the state to discuss hot topics in the state and make plans for chapter activities. Central to the discussion was building relationships with code officials. With the economic slowdown, inspectors have more time to devote to each job, so it is more important than ever to provide them with educational literature and conduct seminars on Building Component Safety Information (BCSI). The chapter is following up with contacts in Louisville and Lexington as well as considering additional avenues for information exchange. It is also pursuing structural engineering groups and responding to requests for the Carbeck CD from fire officials. With a lot on its plate, the chapter plans to have an active educational schedule this year.
April 2006
For the second year in a row, the Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky and Tennessee Chapters held a joint chapter meeting in Chattanooga, TN. The guest speaker for this January meeting was WTCA Legal Counsel Kent Pagel. Speaking on “Successfully Negotiating an Acceptable Customer Contract,” Mr. Pagel did not disappoint the audience. His presentation focused on the following elements:
General considerations to follow when reviewing a customer's proposed purchase order or subcontract agreement
A review of problematic provisions from a sample agreement
Guidelines on how to address problematic provisions
In addition, a preview was shown of his new program for WTCA, ORisk: Online Risk and Liability Management. The meeting also offered the opportunity for members to discuss industry issues with neighboring chapters and share their experiences. For example, members of both the Alabama and Tennessee Chapters have encountered requests for sealed placement diagrams. The draft WTCA Tech Note for Alabama was reviewed and it was decided that a similar Tech Note would be drafted for Tennessee. Everyone in attendance agreed that the evening was time very well spent.
May 2005
The Kentucky Chapter held its first official meeting of the year on February 18 in Lexington. Several familiar faces gathered to restart the chapter and determine a regular meeting schedule. The first issue discussed was lumber quality, including problems with mold and wane. Members were glad to note that the mold issue had subsided, but were distressed with the wane found especially in the middle of lumber packages. Members were also confronting a new issue with sealed placement diagrams. Architects and engineers have been requesting sealed diagrams, and some members have walked away from jobs rather than accept the increased responsibility without compensation. The chapter will start educating code officials so that they see where the responsibility truly lies. Similarly, the chapter will develop a plan to use the Carbeck Fire Performance CD and plant tours to educate local fire officials. Rounding out the meeting, everyone present was encouraged to consider becoming a chapter officer and recruit more members to attend the meetings. The next quarterly meeting will be held on Friday, May 20 in Lexington.
April 2005
The WTCA-Kentucky Chapter held a very successful Joint Chapter Meeting on February 11 in Chattanooga, TN. Approximately forty members from all four chapters participated in the meeting and dinner. Featuring a roundtable discussion on issues of interest to members, the evening could not have gone better. The discussion included the BSCI series of documents, sealed placement plans and electronic seals, the new Truss Load Guide, whole house design, contracts and warranties, and third party inspections. Chapter members were able to strengthen their relationship with WTCA staff and each other, and they may have begun an annual joint meeting tradition.
December 2002
The WTCA-Kentucky Chapter has selected a new representative to the WTCA Board of Directors. Clyde Bartlett of Bluegrass Truss Company in Lexington, KY has begun a three-year term as chapter representative. The WTCA-KY expresses its appreciation to Clyde for volunteering his time and effort in this pursuit, and thanks him for his dedication on behalf of the chapter.
January/February 2002
The Kentucky Chapter is currently working with staff at WTCA-National to develop a Chapter Position Paper and Truss Technology in Building fact sheet regarding the Draft Report from the Governor’s Smart Growth Task Force. This will be available for all members to distribute to their customers, employees and anyone else to educate them on the issue. It is important that those of us with a stake in this issue stay informed and prepared to become vocal if necessary.
December 2001
The Kentucky Chapter took advantage of the fact that this year’s Building Component Manufacturers Conference was held in Louisville, KY and held a chapter meeting at the show. The guest speaker was WTCA Executive Director Kirk Grundahl. The roundtable discussion featured many important issues affecting companies at both the national and local levels. The examination of national issues on which WTCA is hard at work included the softwood lumber countervailing duty, mold, building code changes, electronic seals and signatures, and sealed cover sheets. In addition, chapter members discussed the “smart growth” initiatives in their area and what they are doing to monitor and prevent them. Moreover, WTCA-KY and WTCA-National plan to work together to create a policy statement and Truss Technology in Building fact sheet on the Smart Growth issue.
CHAPTER HIGHLIGHTS APPEARING IN WOODWORDS MAGAZINE:
June/July 2001
The Kentucky Chapter was pleased to be invited to speak before the Structural Engineers of Kentucky at the state convention on April 27. Keith Kinser presented the “Wood Truss Construction” Truss Technology Workshop to a group of almost 40 engineers from all over the state. The presentation was well received with a lively question and answer session that quickly overwhelmed the prepared program.
The chapter has been following closely the progress of the Governor’s Smart Growth Initiative. The House Resolution to create a Smart Growth Task Force was amended to the point that the Governor chose not to sign. He is instead making plans to appoint a commission of his own. WTCA-Kentucky has requested a seat on this commission.
April 2001
On February 20 in Covington, KY, the Kentucky and Ohio Chapters held a joint chapter meeting following the Partners for Progress Convention. Because this convention was sponsored by the Kentucky Lumber and Building Material Dealers Association, the Ohio Lumbermen’s Association and the Builders Supply Association of West Virginia, it presented a great opportunity to hold a WTCA meeting that addressed the issues of members across the region. Moderated by WTCA-KY Chapter President Keith Kinser, important topics on the agenda included the live load changes in Ohio and the proposed Smart Growth Initiative in Kentucky. During the convention, WTCA-KY and KLBMDA also sponsored two Truss Technology Workshops taught by WTCA-National. For information on additional chapter events, contact WTCA-National.
January/February 2001
The next Kentucky Chapter meeting will be held in concert with the February 19-20 convention of the Kentucky, Ohio and West Virginia Lumber Dealers Associations. The Chapter also will be presenting Truss Technology Workshops during the show.
December 2000
The Kentucky Chapter will be coordinating two Truss Technology Workshop programs for the February convention of the Kentucky, Ohio, and West Virginia Lumber Dealers Associations. They are planning to include these as break out sessions on Monday and Tuesday of the show. In addition, WTCA–Kentucky has been asked to present programs for the Louisville Home Builders Association, the Structural Engineers Association of Kentucky, and the Central Kentucky Chapter of AIA. The chapter is planning a meeting to coincide with the KLBMDA convention to be held in Covington in February.
November 2000
The Kentucky Chapter is planning the promotion of the association by offering TTW programs to other associations throughout the state. Currently being scheduled are two programs with the Home Builders Association of Louisville, one program and perhaps a convention breakout for the Structural Engineers Association of Kentucky, and the potential for a breakout session at the February convention of the Kentucky Lumber and Building Material Dealers Association in conjunction with their sister organizations in Ohio and West Virginia. 2001 is shaping up to be a very busy year.
August 2000
Turnout for the spring meeting in Lexington was good as Kirk Grundahlpresented “Putting a Human Face on the Truss Industry.” It was a welcomed opportunity to discuss ways to increase the influence, presence and strength of the chapter.
April 2000
The next WTCA—KY general membership meeting is scheduled for April 6 with Kirk Grundahl presenting on “Putting a Human Face on the Truss Industry.”
November 1999
The WTCA-KY will meet on November 12. Ron Crouch, Director of the Kentucky State Data Center for the University of Louisville, will be presenting on New Rules for a New Demographic Ballgame.
August 1999
The Kentucky Chapter had its first meeting in quite some time on May 25 in conjunction with the Wood Solutions Fair that was held in Covington, Kentucky. Kirk Grundahl spoke about the recent achievements and plans of the National WTCA, followed by an open discussion of goals, concerns, etc., for the state chapter. Labor issues and design responsibilities topped the list. The next meeting will be held in Lexington on or about the first week of November with a speaker(s) to discuss staffing issues and opportunities in Kentucky. More information will be sent out as it becomes available. Thanks go to Koss Kinser and Clyde Bartlett for representing the chapter at the WTCA booth for the WSF the next day. Also, special thanks to John Piercefield and Ralph Mason for attending their first WTCA-KY Meeting. Their input was greatly appreciated.
June/July 1999
The chapter met on May 25 and several from the group attended the Wood Solutions Fair on May 26 in Covington, Kentucky.
