A draft of the NAHB Residential Green Building Standard was released in February 2008. The final draft of the standard has been submitted to ANSI for approval of the development process and is currently under review. (Click here for a PDF of the current draft.)

The Standard was based on the NAHB Model Green Home Building Guidelines, developed in 2004. When the Standard is approved by ANSI, it may be adopted by local green home building programs or local building departments as a conformance guide.

The chart at right summarizes the framework of the NAHB Green rating system. There are between 45 and 146 points required in the Resource Efficiency category. As you’ll see, a fair amount of these points can be earned by using building components. Of the programs that are national in scope, this is by far the most favorable toward components.

The bottom portion of this chart (see TOTALS) shows the point ranges for each of the four levels of NAHB Residential Green Building certification. Above that, is a summary of the minimum number of points required in each section of the Standard.

Next, let’s look at the Resource Efficiency section of the NAHB Standard, Chapter 6. Click on the category in the box below for a summary of requirements and corresponding points that component products can earn.
