WTCA's TATO 1 - HIRE THE RIGHT STUFF! — 6/13/2003

Madison, WI - Good help is hard to find, and the component manufacturing industry is no exception. Thanks to the latest addition to the Wood Truss Council of America's (WTCA) Truss Knowledge Online Program, finding the right person for the job is easier than ever. Technical Assessment Test Online 1 (TATO 1) provides a comprehensive device for assessing and hiring technical personnel.

Any potential truss plant new hire can take TATO 1. A series of 50 timed questions are used to evaluate a sales, design or production candidate's innate math and 3-D visualization skills. Brent Hendricks, Customer Service Manager for Idaho Truss and Component Co. was impressed with TATO's flexibility: "I like the idea that a person does not need to have specific truss knowledge in order to answer the questions."

Rachel Smith, WTCA's Director of Technical Education, pointed out that "feedback from WTCA members who beta-tested TATO showed that they wanted the questions timed to give the results even more meaning." A hiring manager can quickly determine if a prospective employee possesses the savvy required for these specialized positions.

"We designed the questions to determine how well candidates could think on the fly, that's why no calculators or special software are permitted," explains Smith. "Only a computer with internet access and scratch paper are needed, and managers can obtain immediate feedback that can be compared to other candidates' results or national averages."

Identifying in advance those applicants with a technical capacity will save time and money. "The math and 3-D portions of the TATO are good," Hendricks commented. "3-D reasoning is such a critical part of any new hire's assessment and it is either difficult or impossible to teach if the candidate does not have the aptitude for it."

WTCA will release TATO 2 later this summer. TATO 2 is an advanced truss industry specific test that managers can use to determine a truss technician's level of knowledge and ability. It is also a useful tool for taking inventory of design department skills and clarifying priorities for individuals.
